What Women's International Day is REALLY About

I didn't either. Well, I knew the annual International Women's Day was about standing up for women's issues and celebrating our individual and collective achievements, but beyond that I didn't know much. This year, I was compelled to learn more by visiting the International Women's Day website.

This year's theme, which extends beyond March 8, is Each for Equal. As it states on the website: Equality is not a women's issue, it's a business issue.

Gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive.

The race is on for the gender equal boardroom, a gender equal government, gender equal media coverage, gender equal workplaces, gender equal sports coverage, more gender equality in health and wealth ...and the list goes on.

An equal world is an enabled world, so how can each of us play our part? Here are a few ways:

  1. Challenge gender stereotypes and bias

  2. Maintain a gender equal mindset

  3. Callout gendered actions or assumptions

  4. Celebrate women's achievements

  5. Forge positive visibility of women

  6. Try to influence others' beliefs and actions

My life's work is to help women overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams, and do so with the support of myself or a group of women. The power of women supporting women cannot be underestimated. I can only imagine the positive impact we can each make when we're living the life we were meant for, and can confidently use our voices to drive a gender equal world. A world in which we can ALL thrive as women, mothers, sisters, employees, neighbors, business owners, and leaders.

Cheers to amazing women who have forged the way and the opportunity for us to do so NOW! On this International Women's Day and beyond, I invite you to support #EachforEqual.

P.S. Bring awareness on social media by putting your arms out front and strike the #EachforEqual pose to motivate others.
